Our team and skills

The SMCS brings together a dozen statistical consultants with a wide range of skills, forming a wonderful multidisciplinary team.

Indeed, in addition to their Master’s degree or PhD in Statistics, each one of the SMCS consultants has a background in another field, such as Psychology, Political Science, Civil Engineering, Business Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Chemistry and Bioengineering. Several SMCS members also worked in the private sector before joining the UCLouvain family.

As a result, the SMCS has developed a wide range of expertise, enabling it to work on projects involving medical, biological and omics data; survey, psychological and sociological data; textual, linguistic and social network data; corporate and tracking data...

In addition, for very specific projects, the team's consultants do not hesitate to call on members of other UCLouvain entities, invaluable for their specialized know-how in some data analysis-related fields. These associated consultants carry out all or part of their duties within the framework of the SMCS's activities and missions and regularly collaborate with its members, although they are not assigned to the platform. Associated consultants include professors and researchers in statistics, as well as consultants from other UCLouvain entities whose work is similar to that of the platform's in-house consultants.

The SMCS also relies on associated trainers to enrich the training courses offered with their experience in the field.

As part of their role as assistants, some researchers from ISBA (Institute of Statistics, Biostatistics and Actuarial Sciences) occasionally collaborate with the SMCS team to support consultancy and training activities.

The statistical techniques mastered by the team's consultants include data preparation and descriptive statistics, regression and mixed models, parametric and non-parametric statistics, exploratory and confirmatory multivariate analyses, experimental design and sample size calculation, Bayesian statistics, survey methodology, survival analysis and statistical quality control.

As for software, SMCS consultants know, use and train in the use of the "Big 5" (JMP, R, SAS, SPSS and Stata), as well as more specialized software and languages such as LimeSurvey, Python, Minitab and NVivo.
