Study objectives
From the humblest pottery fragment
to
the finest work of art, in other words, human material culture in all its forms, such is the objective of the bachelor's
programme in Archaeology and Art History.
In general, we deal with both ancient and more recent remains, both
simple and prestigious objects, both monumental buildings and personal
trinkets, both furniture and musical instruments, both rarities and
traditional items, etc.
|
Besides developing the necessary qualities of
intellectual curiosity and critical judgment, a student will discover
how to train his visual memory, how to intensify his sensitivity
to artistic realities and how to recognize technological processes. He
will learn how to approach works of art and to distinguish
falsifications from genuine works, by using modern
investigation
techniques and through the direct study of monumental and material
sources. Our methods are wide-ranging :
in situ
examination of works of art,
study of museum collections, the conducting of fields surveys and
taking part in archaeological excavations, to name but a few. In this
way, a student is
given a general introduction to the arts and civilisations of
western
Europe, from ancient times to the present day.
|
Evaluation
The oral and written exams aim to evaluate the
knowledge, know-how and communication skills of the student.
Certain subjects take the form of intermediate evaluations spread over
the course of the year, particularly during the first polyvalent
quadimester.
