Admission conditions

The following students have access to the second university study cycle ("licence") in Sociology :

A. Holders of a first cycle diploma of university studies ("candidat") under the following conditions :

1. All holders of a "candidat" diploma in Sociology delivered by a university of the French-speaking Community of Belgium.

2. Holders of a "candidat" diploma in Social Sciences : Information and Communication or a "candidat" diploma in Political Sciences or a "candidat" diploma in Economic Sciences and Management, delivered by a university of the French-speaking Community of Belgium, on condition the following prerequisites were followed in the first cycle of studies ("candidature").

Courses not followed during the "candidature" must be added to the "licence" programme.

3. Holders of a "candidat" diploma in Economic, Social and Political Sciences, from other Belgian or foreign universities, on condition the prerequisites not previously followed are added to the programme.

4. Holders of other "candidat" diplomas - graduate ("licencié") or masters (" maître"), obtained from another faculty or another department of a Belgian or foreign university, subject to the acceptance of their application by the Department and the adding - if necessary - of complementary courses to their first year programme, or via a single year of "candidature", as necessary.

Questions concerning admission or complementary information linked to the points 2, 3 and 4 above should be addressed to the academic studies secretary of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.

B. Holders of a non-university higher study diploma on the following conditions :

1. Holders of a social assistant or social advisor diploma subject to passing an entrance exam and adding complementary courses to the first year programme, if necessary.

2. Holders of a diploma as assistant in Psychology, specialised "educator", non-university "gradué" in Communication, in Librarian Studies, Human Resources, holders of a lower secondary school teacher-training certificate in Human Sciences (history, geography, social sciences) subject to having passed one year of the training programme..

Requests concerning admission or complementary information linked to points 1 and 2 should be addressed to the secretary's office of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.

C. Other university or higher education diploma holders may have access to this programme by obtaining a one year "candidat" in Sociology (single "candidature" ). Requests for admission and information linked to the single "candidature" should be addressed to the secretary's office for the "Candidature" in Economic, Social and Political Sciences..

General structure of the programme

1. The second cycle of university studies ("licence") diploma in Sociology is obtained at the end of four years of studies, spread over two years of first cycle of studies ("candidature") and two years of "licence". The two years of "candidature" are partially common to all the departments of the Faculty of Economic, Social and Political Sciences and are organised directly under the authority of the Faculty.

2. The "licence" programme is spread over two years of studies and covers a total volume of 795 hours of courses and seminars as well as the writing of a thesis at the end of the course. The students must folow at least 495 hours of courses in the first year, to be able to combine the rest of their programme in the second year with the preparation of their thesis.

3. One information session is organised at the beginning of the academic year to help each student specify his study project and compose his programme.

4. Apprenticeship : the students are requested to refer to the Departmental reglementation on the subject.

5. Thesis : the students are requested to refer to the Departemental reglementation on the subject.

6. The students of the first year must register a course on Religious Sciences to their programme.

G. Apprenticeship (SOC9001)

On the suggestion of the student, and in agreement with one of the lecturers, it is possible to replace one or several courses

( maximum three) by an apprenticeship in an institution external to UCL. The suggestions should be handed in for approval to the Academic Studies Secretary of the Department which will follow the opinion of the Sociology unit.
