Aims

To help students be aware of the lexical phenomena, either through the development of the instruments of description or through the search of the lexical origin.

Main themes

Diachronical study of the French lexicon: tools of description, development of the etymology.

Content and teaching methods

After a brief presentation of the French lexicon (original one before borrowing from other languages and without neologisms), the course will try to show the growing awarenes of the lexical phenomena, through the emergence of lexicography, and this up to the most recent forms of description (electronic dictionaries, etc). Alternaly, the etymology and its methods will also be analysed.

Evaluation : Oral exam, with a paper to present at the exam.

Teaching materials : Selective bibliography.
