Main themes

Reading Comprehension

o To be able to understand texts that consist mainly of everyday or field-related language.o To be able to understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters.
o To be able to understand standard field-related correspondence and get the gist of the meaning.
o To be able to read articles and reports concerned with contemporary and field related problems in which the writers adopt particular viewpoints.

Listening Comprehension

Individual:
o To be able to understand most recorded or broadcast audio material delivered in standard language about current events or topics of general interest.o To be able to follow a lecture or talk within his/her own field, provided the subject matter is familiar and the presentation straightforward and clearly structured.
Interactive :
o To be able to catch with some effort much of what is said around him/her in discussion, while possibly finding it difficult to participate effectively in discussion with several native speakers who do not modify their language in any way.

Speaking Skills

Individual :
o To be able to present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to his/her field of interest.
o To be able to explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

o To be able to communicate fluently and spontaneously, to a degree that allows normal interaction with native speakers.
o To be able to take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining your views.
o To be able to develop an argument well enough to be followed without difficulty most of the time.

Code

Vocabulary : consolidation of basic vocabulary (+/- 2000 words cfr course NEER 1330 and CD-ROM ILV) and extension of general vocabulary (+/- 2000 words cfr "Woorden in Context", part 2, L. Dieltjens, ... ed. De Boeck and thematic vocabulary in course notes)Grammar: consolidation of the specific structures of the Dutch language.

Culture

In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects and develop their capability to assess the values transmitted by these cultures through different domains (social, political, economic, athletic, ...)

Content and teaching methods

NEER 1332 - intermediate level (second part)

- 60-hours course taught 2 hours a week throughout the academic year (90 hours course taught 3 hours a week
throughout the academic year for the students who followed the elementary level in the first year of their
Bachelor's degree).
- Intended for the students ECGE 12 BA / INGE 12 BA - 4 ECTS

Pre-requisites :
the student should have followed the course of intermediate level part 1 (NEER 1330) or a course of similar level (level B1 of the CEF for the reading and listening skills, B1- for the speaking skills and A2 for the writing skills)
Aims : B2- level of the CEF for the speaking skills (main objective).
B2- level of the CEF for the listening skills, B2 of the CEF for the reading skills and B1level of the CEF for the writing skills.

Contents and pedagogical approach :
- vocabulary and grammar exercises
- listening and reading comprehension exercises.
- individual and interactive speaking exercises
- writing exercises (to some extent)
- texts and activities on subjects of general and field- related interest

Evaluation : continuous assessment, written and oral exam.

Level second year of the Bachelor's degree in economic science and management

Pre-requisite(s)
The student should have followed the first year course of lower intermediate level (NEER1330) or a course of similar level, corresponding to the B1 level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages".

Content and Pedagogical Approach

Self tuition: vocabulary (Woorden in Context, part 2, L.Dieltjens, …, ed. De Boeck) and usage (CD-Rom ILV) The course is articulated around themes, each of which includes receptive and productive activities aimed at consolidating and broadening vocabulary and grammar. Particular emphasis on grammar points, likely to cause difficulties to French-speaking learners.

. Workload

Classroom hours : 54 hours (+ 27 remedial hours for students who followed the first year elementary course (NEER 1130)
Self-study : 66 hours (+ 15 remedial hours for students who followed the first year elementary course (NEER 1130)


. Pedagogical accompaniment

Classes in groups of max. 30 students.
The teacher is available during his/her office hours and can be contacted by e-mail.
Guidance is also provided at the Self-tuition Center.
