Aims

To acquire advanced+ skills in listening and reading (B2+ level - Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ).


At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

- follow extended speech even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only implied and not signalled explicitly
- understand standard spoken language, live or broadcast, on both familiar and unfamiliar topics normally encountered in personal, social, academic or vocational
- understand spoken language displaying light regional varieties
- easily summarize lectures, conferences and talks (even on specialized topics) presented by native speakers
- easily follow complex interactions between third parties in group discussion and debate, even on abstract, complex unfamiliar topics
- understand allusive or humorous texts
- recognize a wide range of idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, appreciating register shifts
- understand in detail lengthy, specialized, complex, literary texts, etc.
- easily discover the structure of discourse
- appreciate stylistic differences between texts (written or spoken)
- recognize text types and focus on their linguistic characteristics

Listening and reading exercises with focus on style and discourse structure.

Content and teaching methods

Contents

To reach the aims defined for the course, students will be presented with reading and listening activities. A wide range of lengthy and complex documents will be used (i.e. documents likely to be encountered in social, professional or academic life).


Method

A 30h course where various models of textual analysis are presented and practised. Listening and reading comprehension exercises. Focus on discourse structure and text cohesion & coherence.

Written exam to assess reading and listening skills. Focus on lexical, cultural and stylistic issues in the language.
