Aims

This course is given to absolute beginners who have never studied the Spanish language. By the end of the course the students are expected to have reached an A1+ (A1/A2) level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). To Pass this course does not give an immediate access to the course ESPA 1300 (niveau moyen).
This course is intended in priority for the "pressed" initial students, for example, because they must leave for Latin America or Spain at the semester following the course. This course is also opened to the members of the personnel of the UCL.

Main themes

This course tries to develop the students' autonomy. This course wants to be eminently practical and to develop systematically the linguistic abilities of the students by various means of training. Here the goals to reach:

Reading Comprehension
- can understand short, simple texts written in common everyday language.
- can understand everyday signs and notices in public places, such as streets, restaurants, railway stations and in
workplaces.
- can understand short simple personal letters.
- can understand short, simple narrative or descriptive texts written adapted to A2 level (Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages).

Listening Comprehension
- Communicate in simple requiring simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities. A2 level
(Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Speaking Production
- Can speak about oneself on a descriptive way, about his environment and living conditions (learning a language, introducing him/herself, speaking about his family, everyday situations and job, describing his home, etc.)
- Can communicate simple and current tasks requiring only short and direct exchange

Writing production
- write short and current documents (a postcard, a personal letter, etc.) A2 level (Common European Framework of

Code
- Can correctly pronounce the various sounds of standard Spanish and put them in relation to his writing and control the basic vocabulary of standard Spanish (approximately 2000 words)
- Can control the principal grammatical contents and the linguistic exhibitors of basic Spanish. A2 level (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
- At the speaking level, the stress is laid of advantage over the communication that on the correction; however, a detailed attention will be given to the phonetic correction.

Culture

In reference to all the above mentioned aptitudes, sensitizing with the culture of the Spanish-speaking countries

Content and teaching methods

- Code and title : ESPA 1100A - Spanish - Elementary level
- Year of study : Students of all faculties and workers at UCL
- Number of hours, rhythm, terms : 45h, 3h/week, one semester (the first or the second)
- Aim and contents : reading and listening comprehension of texts, study of elementary vocabulary and basic
grammar, reading aloud (stress and pronunciation).
- Evaluation : permanent ; written and oral exams.

Course of 45h (3h per week) during the 1st or 2nd semester.
Prerequisites
None, but a good personal motivation is essential to make a success of this "accelerated" training.
The students must have registered the course in the program of studies or in the "Service de formation du Personnel de l'UCL".
The admission is closed to " free" students.
Assessment:
Formative and certificative continue Assessment. Written and oral final Exam.

- Laboratory exercises of " Castilla " method by Prof. Salvador García Bardón.

- Folk songs from Spain and Latin America.
- Other didactic and authentic papers will be given to the studens.

Course hours: 45 H Autonomous work: 65 H
Pedagogical accompaniment
- The ideal number of students by group is of 25 maximum.
- The teacher is available in his/her hours of reception.
- Self training Centre and Salle multimédia de l'ILV.
