Aims

These lectures deal broadly with the artistic disciplines of the 20th century: painting, sculpture, architecture, design, music, photography, cinema, video, dance, installations. It will allow the students to ask questions about the history of art by becoming aware of the specifics of their own period.

Main themes

The lectures deal with the issues and challenges surrounding artistic creation in the 20th century and draw attention to the cross-disciplinary and/or chronological concepts at work. In order to bring out the actuality of contemporary art and echo it more accurately, the lecturer will invite Belgian and foreign speakers, when the occasion arises, and arrange visits to exhibitions, follow up important publications as they come out, taking media events into account.

Content and teaching methods

The lectures will explain the issues and challenges surrounding artistic creation in the 20th century and draw attention to the cross-disciplinary and/or chronological concepts at work.
- Avant-garde artists: painting, sculpture, music, dance, photography at the beginning of the 20th century,
- Modernism and anti-modernism: architecture, town planning, design, painting, sculpture, photography and cinema in the period between the two wars,
- The American scene: painting, sculpture, jazz in the 1940s and 1950s.
- A shattered landscape: diversity and contradiction of the creative and critical currents worldwide since the 1960s,
- Post-modernism and question-marks at the turn of the millenium.
