Aims

History of painting and engraving in modern times and the contemporary period.

Main themes

Painting, in present-day Belgium, from the 16th century to our time (possibly also in relation to other schools of painting).
Engraving in the modern period: mostly Dürer, Lucas de Leyde, Rembrandt, Rubens' school of engravers, classical French engraving. A seminar with practical exercises on a subject in the programme, for instance P. Breughel the Elder and his successors, Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens and their contemporary engravers, also Flemish expressionism, Brabant Fauvism, the origins of abstract art; the place of engraving and book illustrations in contemporary art.

Content and teaching methods

Painting and engraving in the territories of the Netherlands, from the 16th century to our time (possibly also in relation to other schools). Practical exercises in the form of a seminar dealing with a subject in the programme, for instance, Bosch, Breughel and their period - Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens, Flemish expressionism, Brabant fauvism, the origins of abstract art, etc.
