Aims
This course investigates a range of artistic disciplines practised in the19th century and the firts half of the 20th century, focusing primarily on architecture, painting, drawing, sculpture and engraving.
Main themes
The course examines the issues involved in the Plastic Arts during this period. The major aesthetic movements are Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Academicism, Impressionism, Neo-impressionism, Nabism and Symbolism, Expressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism, Abstract pioneers, Metaphysical painting, Dadaism, Surrealism and Realism of the inter-war years.
Content and teaching methods
This course reviews the formal and semantic properties of each figure and aesthetic movement examined. Parallels will be established with contemporary philosophical, political, historical and psychological thinking. for each period.
