Aims
By the end of the course, the students should have reached an upper-intermediate level in three skills: reading, listening and speaking (both individual and interactive). Priority will be given to the first two skills. As regards speaking skills, the emphasis will be on fluency rather than accuracy.
Course description
The topics addressed in class aim at arousing the undergraduates' interests in English-speaking countries' culture and history, both past and present.
. Reading :
The set texts range from historic/al sources to today's specialized literature and vary in language registers to
include prose, speeches, poetry, songs, video scripts
from several target-language countries. Some are meant
to be skimmed, scanned, analyzed, compared or discussed.
. Listening comprehension : understanding television programmes (talks, lectures) on subjects of interest to
historians, historians of art, archaeologists,
. Speaking skills: expressing one's opinion on the different themes covered in class

Portfolio of texts and videos (authentic documents from various sources: newspapers, magazines, encyclopaedias,

Methodology
. 30 hours of teacher-led classes featuring pair and team work
- Training learners to become autonomous readers of authentic written documents
- Broadening the students' vocabulary scope
- Teaching key grammar points such as tenses, auxiliaries, connectives and the passive voice.
. 30 hours of organised tutorials (partly done in the language lab): speaking (15 hours) and listening exercises (15
hours).
- listening decoding strategies in a foreign language
- role plays, debates, discussions
- English pronunciation and stress patterns.

Prerequisites
None in principle. Yet, in practice, as the course is taught in the target language, the participants need to have an A2-level command of English to attend the lectures and take part in the conversation classes.
