Aims
To provide conceptual tools for a critical approach to the important philosophical interpretations of the arts and their history. Acquisition of knowledge about the philosophical presuppositions of aesthetic theories.
Main themes
Reading and critical commentaries of texts from the history of philosophy of art. Synthesis of the important philosophical thought on the beautiful and art, and discussion of central concepts of the different approaches.
Content and teaching methods
Explanation of texts chosen in the philosophical tradition, discussion on the presented theses. The choice of the thinkers and the works studied centers around one or two themes, which may change from year to year. In 2001-02 : analytic philosophy and the definition of art ; phenomenological approaches : the works and the world.

Oral examination or supervised personal assignment.
