Internal configuration

Two unequal parts:

  • Basilar part of pons
    • Anterior part of pons
    • Transversal fibers, from the nuclei of the pons, that
      • Intersect the pyramidal fasciculi
      • Cross the median line
      • Form the middle cerebellar peduncles
  • Tegmentum of pons
    • Posterior part of pons
    • Direct continuation of the medulla oblongata
    • Posterior limit: grey matter that forms the floor of the fourth ventricle

The reticular formation

  • Part of the tegmentum of pons
  • Divided into two symmetrical parts by the pontine raphe

The fourth ventricle

  • Reaches its largest size at limit between the pons and the medulla oblongata
  • Narrowing into a triangle at the upper half of the pons (convergence of the superior cerebellar peduncles)
