Linguistics studies the way language works by looking at the different languages spoken by humankind. This is a rigorous discipline which is concerned with all aspects of language. The approach taken is a decidedly functionalist one. The principles and mechanisms of daily oral and written communication are studied.

Students will have acquired at the end of the course complementary skills in the main theoretical branches of linguistics (syntax, lexicology, semantics and pragmatics), the methodological tools to understand the complex nature of linguistics (linguistic statistics, qualitative and quantitative corpus analysis) and an opening towards related disciplines which allows the functioning of language to be put into context. Special attention is given to those subjects where UCL has a cutting edge in linguistics research : discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, sociolinguistics, prosody, contrastive linguistics, linguistic engineering.

The Masters in Linguistics provides many career opportunities. Research leading to a doctorate is an obvious one but the business world and public services also offer various career possibilities. Careers in communications, telecommunications, editing, dictionary compilation, information and communication technologies, where they would hold positions as language specialists. Masters in Linguistics may also teach at non-university third level institutions.

All students take advantage of a general training which combines theoretical and methodological courses which allows access to different specialities via the different focuses and options.

Three focuses are available:

- the 'Research Focus' aims to give students an introduction to scientific research and build on the student's linguistic knowledge in at least one modern language as well as helping them develop specific knowledge of one or several fields of applied linguistics (learning foreign languages, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, contrastive linguistics, etc.).Students will be given a substantial introduction to scientific communication (oral presentation techniques using powerpoint, posters, abstracts, writing scientific articles, etc.) and will discover how research is carried out by participating in conferences or spending time in a research centre (in Belgium or abroad). Such skills could also be used in a non-scientific context.

- the 'Professional Focus in Natural Language Processing' aims to introduce students to the essential methods, technology and concepts related to natural language processing (processing intelligent texts, person-machine interfaces, automatic translation, documentary navigation, teaching materials, electronic dictionaries, etc.).
This is an interdisciplinary training which allows students to study indepth the principal difficulties in analyzing language while at the same time acquiring advanced skills in mastering computer tools and concepts. The objective is to train specialists (competent both in computers and linguistics) and to allow access to jobs in “language industries” or more generally in information and communication technologies (ICT). Regular seminars provide students with the opportunity to make contacts with the business world. A placement in a company or research centre forms part of the students’ thesis providing them with the opportunity to develop some of their training in an industrial setting.

This progressive programme is accessible to students without prior computer knowledge (students who have already followed computer studies may follow a modified programme). This programme, unique in the French-speaking community in Belgium; is organized jointly with KULeuven, the Facultés polytechniques de Mons-Haineau (FPMS) and the Facultés universitaires Notre-Dame de la Paix (Namur).

- the 'Professional Focus in Applied Linguistics for Language Learning' aims to give students an introduction to the tools, methodology and concepts vital to language learning (linguistic policy, learning psychology, language-specific methodology). Based on the students’ profile, they will study certain aspect specific to the learning of French, Dutch, German or English. UCL is the only university in the French-speaking.

The programme is made up of :
♦ core courses (60 credits);
♦ one focus (30 credits);
♦ and two options or optional courses (30 credits).

Changing from one focus to another is possible under certain conditions. The request is submitted for approval by the Faculty’s academic secretary.

Other accessible masters :
At the end of the master 120, each focus of the Master in Linguistics can be obtained in a new year of 30 credits only.

1° Student must hold a first level university degree.

2° Provide proof of a sufficient level in French (B1 of the European Framework of Reference ) 

3° Student must have followed training including at least 30 credits in linguistics and/or 'sciences du langage', including the following 2 courses (or their equivalent) : LFLTR1530 'Introduction aux sciences du langage' (4 credits) and LFLTR1560 'Linguistique générale' (3 credits).

4° Student must demonstrate :
⇒ sufficient skills in the French language, of both a written and oral nature;
⇒ the capacity to develop an argument on the language heard as a general sign and not just a linguistic sign;
⇒ an understanding of the way language works internally (basic units and structures, contemporary theories) and externally (relationship with other disciplines).
If student does not have sufficient training in one or several of these subjects, prerequisites will be added to the masters programme (maximum 15 credits).

The 30 credits of the Minor in Linguistics [30.0] satisfy these requriements.

If the total number of prerequisites exceeds 15 credits, access to the master is subject to the student passing an Preparotory year for Master in Linguistics [60.0], the programme of which is established based on the student's file.

Course equivalences are submitted for approval to the chairman of the jury, the secretary of the jury and the academic faculty secretary.

The range of courses on offer is at once varied and specific: the programme offers the student a vast choice, between 3 focuses and 7 options: linguistique comparative et contrastive, linguistique appliquée à l'apprentissage des langues, linguistique computationnelle, discours et communication, psychologie et langage, linguistique d'une langue moderne (allemand, anglais, espagnol, français, néerlandais) and langage et informatique. Whilst the research focus aims to give the student solid theoretical training in linguistics to prepare him for possible doctoral research via various seminars, the professional focuses focus on teaching more closely rooted in the world of work through courses, seminars and internships.

Aids in the learning process are varied: CD-ROMs which contain the layout, exercises and linguistic data, case studies and group work on iCampus, databases (oral and written) to carry out individual work, work placements in companies or in research laboratories, seminars in small groups, etc. It is clear that this programme provides students with a wide choice in learning methods and permits personalized approaches.

The way the course is evaluated varies depending on what subject is being taught (see syllabus).
Depending on the size of the group, and the subject in question, the possibilities are as follows :
- 'traditional' evaluation in the form of a final oral or written exam;
- 'traditional' evaluation combined with exercises during the year;
- group work in the place of an exam;
- individual work in the place of an exam;
- internship, supervised and evaluated by a 'maître de stage' and an academic.

Courses are evaluated according to current university regulations (see General Examination Regulations). Students may find further information on specific evaluation methods in the course descriptions.

Interuniversity programme with KULeuven
The student can study a lot of courses and seminars at KULeuven ; an explicit agreement was reached on this issue with the Faculteit Letteren de la KULeuven.

Erasmus/Socrates stay
The Erasmus stay will preferably take place during the 2nd semester of the master 1 or during the 1st semester of the master 2. Specific bilateral agreements for the Master en linguistique have been reached with Paris 13, Grenoble 3 and Toulouse 2. Moreover, various agreements reached by the départements d’études germaniques (GERM) and d’études romanes (ROM) are open to students taking the Master in Linguistics.

The master degree specialisation "Linguistics and its Applications for a Multilingual Society" (LAMUSO) focuses on usage-based models and methods in language research and their applications, especially in multilingual contexts. It provides a combination of fundamental courses in various domains of linguistics and more practice-oriented modules related to several fields of activity. One of the main features of the programme is its strong multilingual component. It can be followed entirely in English or in a combination of languages (Dutch, English, French, German), and students have access to advanced descriptive courses of these languages. The aim of the LAMUSO programme is to satisfy the growing demand from both public and private sectors for professionals combining excellent language skills in two or more languages and solid linguistic theory and methodology. Hence, the programme trains students to become professionals in fields such as language teaching, language curriculum design, language syllabus design, language testing, language policy, language technologies, etc. Access to high-level training in scientific research is also provided thanks to the strong collaboration between the linguistics programme and several top research centres hosted by the research Institute for Language and Communication.

Students enrolled in the master degree specialization LAMUSO are encouraged to apply for an Erasmus stay during their second year, in particular in one of the following universities:
