The bachelor programme in Modern Languages and Literatures : General totals
180 credits over 3 years (3 x 60 credits). It consists of a basic major syllabus of 150 credits and a minor syllabus of 30 credits (2 x 15 credits, over years 2 and 3.
Year 1 consists of a semester joint training course with general lectures covering the subjects taught by the Faculty.
From Year 2 onwards, the students are expected to broaden their intellectual and professional horizons by choosing a minor option of 30 credits, either from among other subjects taught in the Faculty or in another UCL Faculty, depending on any prerequisites laid down in these particular programmes.
Three pivotal courses make up the 150 credits of the major orientation of the bachelor syllabus:
(1) methodological and disciplinary training in the Germanic and Romance languages and literature chosen by the student (literary history, critical analysis of texts, syntax, linguistic considerations based on the languages studied, study of civilisations [historical data and contemporary scene]);
(2) practicals in oral and written communication in the Romance and Germanic languages chosen;
(3) introduction to the human sciences (historical criticism, arts and civilisations, European literature, language science, philosophy, general linguistics, logic and argumentation, anthropology and psychology, religious sciences).
