Attached to the Masters in Political and Social Science, the Master in European Studies is a course which gives students the necessary knowledge and analytical tools to understand and evaluate the process of European integration ; it prepares students for those professions relating to the European dimension in different levels of government (European, national, regional and local), lobbying, consulting and think tanks concerned with the European institutions and a variety of other economic and social affairs in which special knowledge of European affairs is required.
The programme covers economics, law and history relating to European construction as well as studying the political aspects, both internal and external. With its emphasis on budgetary resources and how European decisions are made, the European Policies, Dimensions and Means focus is centred on the main internal policies of the Union, whilst the Europe in the World focus has as its subject the role of the Union as a global player in international relations in the era of globalization. The Europe, States and Societies focus concentrates on the issues of identity, culture and education, the ideological debates and the institutional challenges of legitimacy and efficiency.
The Thinking Europe seminar adds an interdisciplinary dimension to the programme.
Students are expected to speak both French and English as some elements of the programme are in English. In addition, the programme also includes study of another European language (German, Spanish, Italian and Russian) to reflect European multilingualism.
The programme is organized jointly by the Institute of European Studies at UCL and the Facultés universitaires Saint-Louis.
Wathever the focus or the options chosen, the programme of this master shall totalise 120 credits, spread over two years of studies each of 60 credits
Professional Focus in European policies, scope and methods
Doctoral programmes : the Institute of European Studies does not award doctorates in European studies. Each Faculty sets the admission criteria for the doctorates it organizes. The Institute of European Studies is part of the doctoral school of European studies.

The programme is formulated in an interdisciplinary way which makes it original and different as it applies elements from political science, law, economy and history to the study of European integration. Cultural and sociological aspects are also studied. Students acquire the basic knowledge which enables them to tackle European questions : the diversity of the different approaches, linked to the interdisciplinarity, enable them to analyse the full complexity of the issues at stake.
There is a bilingual approach to the programme as certain subjects are taught in English: this is a way of acquiring a good command of the language. At the same time, students are also encouraged to choose a third, and perhaps even a fourth, language. The importance of languages also reflects the wide range of cultures involved in the European process and the necessity to promote diversity.
The teaching staff is made up of professors in political science, law, economics and history. Also joining the team are professionals from different institutions and political arenas (e.g. officials from the European Union, members of the European Union, officials from the Belgian Permanent Representation to the EU and journalists) who can bring insight from their experience and who provide expert resources for students’ work.
The final dissertation may be replaced by a work placement suggested by the student, together with a research report. It is hoped to devote the month of February in the second year to allow students to do the work placement or the dissertation. In this way, the credits allocated to the dissertation are really made available to students.
The programme is assessed on a yearly basis by means of a questionnaire distributed to students at the end of each semester.
In 2008-2009 the following destinations are available:
To encourage non French speaking students to join the programme, certain courses are given in English; students may take each examination either in French or English.
