Giving a historical perspective as discussing current issues which the European Union faces, the objective is to overcome the outstakes of EU borders, EU institutional framework, the relationship between States and Regions as well as getting an accurate vision of European unity and diversity.
Main themes
A specific focus is brought to the question of European external and internal borders, to history and State identity, as well as linguistic multiplicity in the EU.
Content and teaching methods
The first chapter provides a history of European borders and a history of borders in Europe. The question of external borders leads to the relationship with Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. When it comes to internal borders, the analysis shows that they haven't disappeared, even though their nature has changed.
The second chapter focuses on three visions of the EU: as a States alliance; as a federation; and as a Common Market.
The third chapter deals with a history of State and sovereignty, centralizing policies and State-building, as well as their resisting forces such as provincial autonomy, regionalism and market freedom.
The last chapter concludes with languages: their diversity, the relationship between language and identity. To complete this cultural overview, the diversity of religions and customs is analyzed.
