Prerequisites

This course is directed at students who have followed the courses of Greek (texts and/or language) at Bachelor level. It is useful to follow a course at Masters level in Greek (text and/or language).

Main themes

An initiation into the reading Greek manuscripts.

The course deals with  the following themes:

1. Notions of codicology and the phenomenon of the copy ( writing in context);

2. The different styles of Greek scripts in books, their evolution, their characteristics (alphabets, types and styles, ligatures, abbreviations, colophons, copyists, etc.).

Mostly, the initiation into reading Greek manuscripts is made in a concrete manner (reading exercices).

Aims

At the end of this course, the student will be capable of reading, or finding the necessary aid to reading a Greek text in a manuscript on paper or parchment (texts copied on papyrus are normally the object of papyrology).

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.

Evaluation methods

An oral exam.

It covers :
- examples of reading;
- the theoretical explanations;
- the study of articles that are complementary to the theory.

Teaching methods

Part of the course consists of lectures (theoretical explanations). The remainder consists of practical exercises in reading.

Content

According to the year, the course can be devoted in part to a particular category of texts or a particular type of writing; but the principal part of the course always deals with the most important styles of Greek writing in books.

Bibliography

The requisite copies will be given out during the lectures; they are drawn from the principal collections of facsimiles and from on-line resources.
