Sofia Nicolussi

PhD Student (2026-)

I am a PhD student at Université catholique de Louvain. My research investigates how the central nervous system combines prior knowledge of an object's properties, such as weight and inertia, with somatosensory feedback to control grip force. Specifically, this project explores how our grip strategies adapt when manipulating objects in weightlessness, an environment where weight and inertia are decoupled. To understand this phenomenon, my work aims to disentangle whether this altered motor behavior reflects a neural prediction error caused by an unfamiliar gravitoinertial context, or a biomechanical necessity driven by physical instability at the skin-object interface. By bridging active manipulation tasks under varying loads with passive measurements of fingertip skin deformation, I aim to quantify the respective contributions of predictive control and mechanics.
