Study objectives

The second university study cycle ("licence") programme in Religious Sciences prepares lay students to teach religion in secondary schools or for other responsibilities in the Church. The "licence" degree entitles access to the teacher-training programme ("agrégation") which leads to the teaching of the catholic religion in all the teaching networks in Belgium (cf. study programme for the "agrégation" in Religious Sciences). It also initiates students into personal research in the subjects they will be teaching, via lectures on specific questions and practical seminar work.

Admission conditions

The programme is designed for holders of a second university study cycle "licence" degree in other disciplines.

Admission procedure

The University admission and enrolment procedures are detailed on the web "General Information" address : http://www.ucl.ac.be/etudes/libres/acces.html

General structure of the programme

The programme covers 900 hours of courses, seminars and exercises, spread over two years of studies, of which one comprises at least 600 hours. This can only be followed after having obtained a "licence" degree in another discipline and may usually be stretched over several academic years. The other year of studies (300 hours maximum) may be stretched over several academic years when followed on a parallel with another main study programme. For students who do not aim to become teachers of religion, the courses of the module : "Methodology for teaching religion" may be replaced by other courses chosen together with the approval of the programme manager.

Positioning of the degree within the University cursus

By laying the foundation of a future research programme in Theology, the "licence" programme prepares the students for the research methods applied during the 3rd cycle programmes : for the pursual of an in-depth study programme (DEA Theology studies) or for the preparation of a doctoral thesis ( PhD study programme in Theology).
