Aims

Main trends in production in the 20th century.

Main themes

The course will focus on an analysis of the work of twenty or so major directors, drawing each time on one or more specific productions: the history of production before 1914 (Antoine, Stanislavski, Craig); new directions in the interwar period in Germany (Jessner, Piscator, Brecht), the USSR (Meyerhold, Vakhtangov, Taïrov) and France (Copeau, le Cartel, Artaud); the brilliance of popular theatre, its uncertainties and the search for new ways of relating with the public (Vilar, Strehler, Planchon, Brook, Grotowski, Mnouchkine, Chéreau, Vitez, etc.).

Content and teaching methods

Syntheses by the teacher and oral contributions from students regarding specific productions, with audiovisual supporting material.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
