Aims

To develop students' ability to link empirical research work to normative perspectives.
To develop students' ability to reflect on ethical problems inherent in the practice of
sociological research.
To develop students' ability to define specific features of the position of the
researcher with that of the actor.
~ To appropriate a normative framework: the theory of recognition.

Main themes

The themes addressed vary every year. The choice of themes is the subject of a discussion
with the students.

Content and teaching methods

Methodology
The seminar is open on alternate sessions to researchers and to actors interested in the
theme under discussion. One of them talks about his/her research or activities, and focuses mainly on the way s/he is attempting to link the empirical and the normative. The lecture is followed by a debate.
Open sessions alternate sessions reserved for the students, and designed to deepen
discussion on issues previously raised, and/or to prepare for forthcoming sessions. At the end of the cycle, the students present a summary in sub groups of what they have agreed.

None.
The summary presented to the group by the students will be the subject of a critical
commentary that aims to deepen certain aspects of the lecture. The examination focuses on this deepening.
