Aims
Knowledge: Students will acquire a range of linguistic, historical, geographical, and cultural knowledge necessary to the understanding of Romance studies.
Skills: not only knowledge, but also know-how (heuristic and bibliographical viewpoints) in Romance studies.
Main themes
An introductory course in Romance studies (linguistics) addressing its fundamental concepts (Romania, the diversity of Romance languages, etc.), the idioms of Romance languages (focussing on their various socio-cultural statuses), and opening up paths of analysis through the description of some approach methods to the phenomena.
Content and teaching methods
The course is organized in three main parts:
1/ Introduction to the history of Romance studies: description of the relationships of language with time, space, and society;
2/ Initiation to bibliographical research and research conventions (know-how);
3/ Presentation of Romance languages in the context of the Indo-European and world languages. Differentiation process starting from vulgar Latin and (succinct) description of 11 Romance idioms in their historical, spatial, and linguistic specifics.
