Aims

The main objective is to develop the necessary skills for the students to express themselves in communicative, interactive situations similar to those they will meet in personal and/or future occupational domains

Reading comprehension
Reading comprehensionCan understand in detail lengthy, complex texts, whether or not they relate to his/her own area of speciality, provided he/she can reread difficult sections

Listening Comprehension
Individual:
- Can follow most lectures, discussions and debates with relative ease
- Can follow complex lines of argument
- Can understand broadcasts on current events or related to his/her field of study
Interactive:
- Can easily follow complex interactions between third parties in group discussions and debates

- Can give clear, detailed descriptions and presentations of complex subjects, integrating sub-themes, developing

Content and teaching methods

NEER 2613 - advanced level

30-hours course taught 1 hour a week throughout the academic year
Intended for the students GERM 13 or 12 BA - 2 ECTS

Pre-requisites : level B2 of the CEF for the reading, the listening and
the speaking skills (main objective)
level B1 of the CEF for the writing skills
Aims : level C1 of the CEF for the reading, the listening and
the speaking skills (main objective)
level B2 of the CEF for the writing skills.

Contents and pedagogical approach :
The students are invited to participate in activities which will help them to develop their communicative skills and proficiency in the language. Examples of activities:
to interact in social relations
to present a project
to attend a meeting
to participate in a workshop
to negotiate
to exchange ideas
to put forward arguments …

Evaluation : continuous assessment, oral exam.

Contents:
To reach the aims defined for the course, the themes addressed will be concrete or abstract, of a rather complex nature, including technical issues in the student's field of specialization.

Teaching method:
The students are invited to participate in activities which will help them to develop their communicative skills and proficiency in the language. Examples of activities:
- to interact in social relations to present a project
- to attend a meeting
- to participate in a workshop to negotiate
- to exchange ideas to put forward arguments …
For each activity, the teacher provides a whole range of tools (communicative strategies, language functions, vocabulary, both general and specialised, grammatical brush ups,) and of texts (written documents, audio-visual documents, internet sites) that will enable the student to be operational in communicative and interactive situations. Feedback and remediation will be provided. Detailed instructions will be given before each activity.

Workload:
Contact hours : 30
Homework and self-study : : 20 hours

Guidance:
- Groups of 15 students maximum
- The teacher is available during her office hours and can be contacted by e-mail.

Evaluation:
There will be a continuous assessment of the student's participation in the activities as well as his or her preparation of those activities. Each student will be asked to make a presentation in front of an audience. The oral exam (both individual and interactive) places the student in situations that are similar to those that have been practised during the course. Part of the final mark will be attributed to a dossier compiled by the student (descriptions of films, books, magazines, broadcasts)
