Aims
This is one of four courses in the "Analyses and theories of development" module.
The aim is to provide students with an analytical framework that will enable them to understand the interactions between economic and social phenomena in the north and the south, and to demonstrate the theoretical and practical implications of the various frameworks for interpreting these phenomena.
Main themes
1. A general presentation of the main socio-economic indicators of development (evolution of the literature and the main reference frameworks at the present time (IMF, World Bank, UNPD, United Nations and OECD) and north/south aspects).
2. An in-depth discussion of doctrinal and theoretical interpretations of the indicators and inter-relationships between them (developments among, and the positions of, the various schools of thought).
3. The main current and future problems of economic and social development (north/south aspects).
Content and teaching methods
Without prejudice to the plan adopted, which varies from year to year, the course will cover the following areas:
- current and future major problems of economic and social development (e.g. dependence, convergence and/or divergence between states, sectoral transition, the role of pensions compared with profit and salaries, trading terms, and the transfer of resources between countries);
- macroeconomic policies dealing with development strategies (e.g. industrialisation policies and the political and economic instruments linked to them, and the various policies advocated at national and international level (essential needs, integrated development, sustainable development, structural adjustment, and combating poverty));
- the distribution of revenues, and economic growth development;
- an in-depth detailed discussion on the doctrinal and theoretical interpretations of the main indicators and of the inter-relationships between them (the evolutions and positions of the various schools of thought).
Methodology
This will be a professorial course accompanied by discussions based on the reading portfolio determined by the teacher.
Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
