Aims

To show that, from the surface of the oceans to the abyssal depths, marine organisms conceal substances with biological activities for use in medicine and industrial applications.

Main themes

1 Marine Pharmacology :description of the organisms presenting bioactive substances and exploration of their physiological and biochemical properties . 2 Origins of the marine bioluminescence and its biomedical applications: description of the luminous organisms and the bioluminescent substances. Importance of those as antioxidant agents allowing to fight against oxidative stress and pathologies which result from this. 3 life at depth and the effects of pollution: the study of the various forms of life of the bathypelagic and abyssal realms makes it possible to understand the functioning of the Earth's greatest ecosystem. Unfortunately, man-made pollution affects the sediments of the abyssal zone and threatens the survival of associated benthic fauna.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Prerequisites: basics in animal biology.
Written support: course notes
