Aims
Students will acquire knowledge on the history of urban development in the great civilizations of Antiquity and its evolutionary characteristics. They will learn how to identify and analyse ancient urban morphology.
Main themes
Definition of the notion of city in Antiquity. Chronological presentation of the main steps of ancient urban development around the Mediterranean; from Pre-History to the Roman Era, focussing on the morphological characteristics proper to each period and civilization.
Content and teaching methods
Illustrated lectures.
Chapter division:
- the first agglomerations and "cities."
- the civilizations of the Near East: Mesopotamia, Egypt.
- Greece.
- Rome.
