Aims

The students will be asked to assimilate the major questions pertaining to sculpture in relation to our times. They should be able to recognise and understand the main stylistic movements of the history of sculpture in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Main themes

Public sculpture in the 19th century
Theory of modern sculpture
Precursors of modern sculpture
Relations between painting and sculpture in the 20th century,
Forms of primitivism,
Spatial emancipation of sculpture,
Sculpture-object,
Fractures in contemporary art.

Content and teaching methods

The programme gives an overview of the emergence of modernity in sculpture both in respect of the works and their critical appreciation (theoretical reviews about the artists, and so on) and monographs on modern and contemporary sculptors. The lectures set the subject in its international context. Practical exercises in situ.
