Aims
This course is intended to make students familiar with the language and key themes in Philosophy and Aesthetics of Art, and thus to give them easier access to the related philosophical texts and encourage them to consult them.
Main themes
The course explains the key concepts in philosophical reflection and Aesthetics (art, beauty, mimesis, form etc), as they have appeared and evolved throughout the history of the two fields. The lectures give students a global overview of the field as well as providing commentaries on classical texts and illustrations.
Content and teaching methods
The course introduces students to Philosophy and Aesthetics of Art. Its aim is to give students a way of approaching theoretical texts on Art and to teach them to adopt this perspective when approaching and talking about a new text. The lectures on the different periods in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art also use works from these different periods to illustrate the major ideas studied.
