Aims

The course aims to provide an introduction to labour economics.

Main themes

After a general survey of the subject, the course will introduce the concept of the labour
market, and some theories relating to it. It will then undertake an in depth examination of macro economic questions relating to job supply, demand, and the meeting of supply and demand. The course will use a variety of approaches to tackle questions such as unemployment, salaries and inequality.

Content and teaching methods

This course aims to sensitise students to the main questions addressed by labour
economics: determining factors of employment supply and demand, salary formation, imbalances on the labour market, and policies pursued with a view to correcting these imbalances.
The course, which consists of lectures, is underpinned by a search for complementarity
Between theoretical and empirical approaches. Concepts, tools, and labour economy models are then mobilised to make a thorough examination of themes mainly chosen for their importance at the present time.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Written examination.
A reading portfolio consisting of theoretical reference books and articles dealing with
empirical questions. The portfolio is updated every year according to the themes under discussion.
This course is part of a study programme given in the evening and on Saturdays.
