Aims
The seminar aims at developing the students' ability to describe and analyse a varied sample of spoken French data. Students should also develop their ability to formalize a linguistic description and to communicate the results of a small research project to the group.
Main themes
Students will be asked to describe and analyse a varied sample of linguistic data:
- written and spoken speech (as far as the medium of communication is concerned)
- spontaneous conversations, debates, scientific papers... (as far as the context of situation is concerned)
- male vs. female speech, standard vs. non standard productions... (as far as sociolinguistic aspects of the speakers and writers are concerned)
The students will have to work out theoretical hypothesises coming from contemporary approaches to discourse, within the field of linguistics, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics (e.g. grammar of the sentence; textual coherence and cohesion; interactional sociolinguistcs
). Methods within the seminar associate research in small groups and teacher's or students lectures. Particular attention will be paid to the students' communicative skills in communicating the results of their research.
Content and teaching methods
This seminar associates collective research in small groups with lectures in order to describe and analyse samples of spoken and written French illustrating various kind of genres, media and varieties. The students will be asked to test various theoretical hypothesises coming from contemporary linguistic theories, and chosen in order to fit specific problems (grammar at the level of the sentence; textual coherence and cohesion; interactional sociolinguistics
)
