Aims

The course objectives are to allow students to acquire basic knowledge of the history of the Church from the 16th to the 18th century, to be able to situate the major events and currents in their chronological framework and thus to be better able to understand the context and evolution of the notions and doctrines which are the subject of other courses in the RELI Master's Degree.

Main themes

To meet these objectives, the course examines the principal forms of the Protestant Reformation, the Council of Trent, with consequences (Catholic Reform, Counter Reformation) that have left an indelible mark on Catholicism (urgings from Rome and certain religious orders, resistance to reform, spiritual dynamism, missionary expansion), State Catholicism (Spain - Portugal, France, Austria), the Jansenist controversy, anti-clericalism in the 18th century and the French Revolution from a religious angle.

Content and teaching methods

This lecture starts with the birth of humanism and Reformation, to arrive to the end of the 18th Century. It touches to the missions, the jansenism, the new religious orders and the popular piety.
