Aims

The main chapter of biological psychiatry (psychosis, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, …) are discussed into details with some case reports and examples from clinical practise or from the literature.

Main themes

This course concerns the biological and biochemical mechanisms of mental diseases, genetic elements, the role of the biological rhythms in mental affections, the place of the neurophysiological techniques and the role of medical imaging in the diagnosis.A large part is devoted to the classification, to the mechanism of action and to the properties of the psychotropic drugs and the psychodysleptic substances.

Content and teaching methods

To give to the medical students the details on the field of biological psychiatry to improve both diagnosis and treatment of mental illnesses.
