Aims
The aim of this course is to teach students the principles and practice of analysing musical scores. Students are given a background in the history of the discipline and expected to read a range of founding texts intended to equip them to adopt a critical approach to their analysis.

Main themes
This course teaches the main notions of musical analysis and current methods of analysis. It involves reading musicological texts and understanding their relationship with musical theory. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to analyse key works.

Content and teaching methods
The course is an introduction to the history of musical analysis and provides an overview of the current main theories in the field. Students will carry out detailed analyses of scores from different historical periods, from the Middle Ages to the present day.
