Aims

In a first part lectures will give an overview of general virology and in the second part specific medical virology will be dealt with. In general virology some aspects of fundamental virology, necessary for a good understanding of the specific part will be given. In this same first part, different aspects of diagnosis, treatment and antiviral immunisation will be discussed. In the part concerning specific medical virology, individual viruses will be reviewed. Priority is given to viruses with a direct impact on dental practice, be it because they give oral lesions, or because they may be transmitted during dental treatment.

Content and teaching methods

The second part is devoted to systematic virology, the following viruses are reviewed: herpesviruses, hepatitis viruses, HIV, picornaviruses, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza, mumps, coronaviruses, rubella, parvovirus B19.
