Aims

Discovery, criticism and employment of sources (written and unwritten) allowing us to reconstitute ancient landscapes.

Main themes

- Typology of sources of historical geography.
- Documentary criticism applied to written, graphic, iconographic and archeological sources.
- Methods of historical geography (traditional methods and new technologies).

Content and teaching methods

Sensitivization to various sources and methods of historical geography : written sources and toponymy, earth sciences, archeology, aerial photography, iconographical sources and ancient cartographic documents Accent is placed on critical use of one or more of them, notably, for reconstituting ancient landscapes The exposition relies on many graphic, photographic, iconographic and cartographic documents.

Evaluation : Oral examination.
Teaching materials : Student notes.
