Aims

The course GLOR 1632, in combination with the course GLOR 1631, aims to teach students the rudiments of biblical Hebrew (grammar, vocabulary and biblical texts).

Main themes

In this course, to be attended in combination with the course GLOR 1631, students will be taught the aspects of Hebrew grammar and vocabulary necessary for them to be able to read biblical texts of intermediate difficulty. At a first level, J. WEINGREEN's teaching method will be followed (Hébreu biblique. Méthode élémentaire, Paris, Beauchesne, 1984), up to the end of the section on the regular verb. Irregular verbs will be dealt with during analysis of passages from the books of Samuel and Kings. The study of irregular verbs will be continued at a second level. Students' grammatical knowledge will be extended, with particular emphasis on syntax. The corpus of biblical texts analysed will include passages from the prophets.

Content and teaching methods

This course teaches students sufficient Hebrew grammar and vocabulary to enable them to read biblical texts of intermediate difficulty. During the first year, J. WEINGREEN's teaching method will be followed (Hébreu biblique. Méthode élémentaire, Paris, Beauchesne, 1984), up to the end of the section on the regular verb. Irregular verbs will be dealt with during analysis of passages from the books of Samuel and Kings. The study of irregular verbs will be continued during the second year. Students' grammatical knowledge will be extended, with particular emphasis on syntax. The corpus of biblical texts analysed will include passages from the prophets. Students will be expected to prepare texts prior to their analysis in lectures.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)
