Aims
By the end of the courses GLOR 1441-1442, students should be:
1. familiar with the background and issues relating to different periods in the history of Greek literature ;
2. able to present and summarise the most important works of Greek literature ;
3. aware of the parameters which contribute to forming a literary judgement (subjective reaction to the work, an understanding of the constraints that existed when the work was created, the contextualisation of the message and the universality of its relevance).
Main themes
The general study of "Greek Literature" is divided into two alternating, complementary courses (GLOR 1441 and 1442). The lectures cover a variety of topics and chapters in Greek literature in the form of summaries drawn up by the lecturer. These are supplemented with a self-study component based on a programme of reading of texts in translation, preparing summaries of these texts and establishing opinions of their value ; students are also expected to draw up a dossier dealing with an issue in Greek literature. This work will be spread out over the two years of BAC 2 and 3.
Content and teaching methods
The lecture course covers a variety of topics relating to the history of Greek prose. In addition to providing a broad outline of the history of Greek literature and a description of the most important Greek authors, lectures are also intended to make students aware of the conditions governing the creation of this body of literature: its historical context, material, ideological and literary constraints, and the influence which successive Western interpretations of these works have had on our current perception of them.
