Aims

By the end of this course, students will have acquired the following:
1) a core Greek-French vocabulary (c. 1,600 words)
2) active mastery of the basics of Classical Greek (phonetics, morphology and syntax)
3) an ability to translate intermediate level literary texts (a dozen or so pages taken from classical prose-writers)

Main themes

A systematic approach to the basics of Greek grammar and critical analysis of literary texts from the classical period. The course combines theory and practice and covers the following areas: in-depth study of Greek phonetics and morphology (noun, pronoun and verb); acquisition of key syntactic structures and a core vocabulary; initiation in the techniques of literary translation, based on critical analyses of classical prose works and some personal reading.

Content and teaching methods

The course offers a systematic approach to Greek phonetics and morphology. Literary texts are analysed in order to illustrate typical syntactic structures and contextualise the linguistic features studied. This teaching will be supplemented with a range of exercises and some reading of classical prose-writers.

Course entry requirements: No previous knowledge of Ancient Greek is required but students who are beginners in Greek are recommended to acquired the basic notions of the grammar by taking the " Beginners' Greek " course given during the first term.
Evaluation : continuous assessment throughout the year through oral testing and personal work. The end-of-year examination has a written and an oral component.
