Aims

Approach to the major literary and historical developments of contemporary American society.

Main themes

This course will focus on literary texts and historical documents to illustrate the cultural diversity and melting-pot experience that characterize American civilization.

Content and teaching methods

Between Americanness and Cross-Culturality: A Survey of American Literature from 1776 to the Present.
This course will study American literature moving chronologically from the Declaration of Independence to the present day (with an emphasis on 20th century prose) through the analysis of extracts placed in their historical, cultural and sociological contexts. This survey will stress major themes and motifs in the work of representative American writers. Special attention will be paid to the question of “Americanness” or, as Edward Saïd puts it, more recent “Un-Americanness” and the often conflicting responses to that question posed by a variety of “migrant” writers (Jewish American writers, Chicanos, Puerto Rican, Chinese American writers but also Native American and African American writers among others). Filmic adaptations and music will also be dealt with, particularly in their expression of cross-culturality.
