Aims

By the end of the course, the students will be able to illustrate, explain (with the help of the appropriate grammatical metalanguage) and justify English grammar in use.

Students will be able to:
- master the basic notions of English grammar and their analysis
- understand and explain the coherence of the English grammatical system (i.e. via tense usage, modality, etc)
- illustrate relationships between grammar, lexis and discourse
- apply the grammatical rules in interactive competence

Introduction to grammatical analysis : the sentence and its constituents
Detailed review of the English grammatical system.

Content and teaching methods

Content :
Detailed review of the English grammatical system : introduction (what is grammar, why study grammar ? / Grammatical hierarchy (from morpheme to text) / Structure and basic syntax / Verbs / Tenses / Modality / Conditional / Nouns / Determiners / Pronouns / Adjectives / Adverbs / Conjunctions / Prepositions / Complementation / Indirect speech.

Methodology :
30h lecture (grammatical theory) + 15h exercises.
Question-answer methodology. Focus on the integration of the student's previous grammatical knowledge in the building of new knowledge.

Prerequisite : the course being taught in English, students should have reached an upper-intermediate level in English.
Assessment : written exam in June.
