Aims

This course aims at the comprehension of the factors intervening in the process of dental caries and the methods of prevention which result from this.
That implies the acquisition of essential concepts concerning dental tissues and the saliva,
the factors etiologic and the mechanism of the decay as well as the methods of prevention specific to these various factors. At the end of the course, the student must be able to motivate and persuade his patients so that those adopt the measures of prevention adapted to their situation.

Main themes

The main topics are:
- the composition of dental tissues and saliva
- morphology of carious lesions
- etiology of dental caries (diet, bacteria, host)
- mechanism and pathology of dental caries
- main methods of prevention
fluoride
diet
oral hygiene
antiseptics

Content and teaching methods

Etiology of the carious process.
Preventive methods based on the etiologic factors
