To extend students' understanding of the essential components of present day European news
within the framework of training in information and communication.

Content and teaching methods

This course, which is an extension of Course COMU2204 (Foundations of an understanding of
Current affairs I), seeks to conduct a monitoring exercise of recent European news, and re insert these issues in their political, economic. social, historical, cultural and societal settings.
To this end:
the first part of the course will address issues of methodology in searching for
information sources;
the second part of the course will embrace an examination and monitoring exercise of the
main items of European news (invited guests will complement students' learning of the items
analysed);
seminars that form part of the course, and are designed to enable students to acquire an
understanding of the news, will be organised throughout the year.
This course will call for students' active, ongoing participation when both monitoring
news and putting information dossiers together.

Pre requirement
To take part in this course. students must already have done Course COMU2204 (Foundations
of an understanding of current affairs I), and at the same time attended the cycle of lectures
given by the Professor of European Journalism.

Assessment:
The course will include weekly assessment sessions. Students will also be questioned twice a year by a panel largely made up of information professionals.

Supervision:
This course needs special supervision because of the weekly evaluations. The participation of outside experts is also critical.
