Aims

The course aims to analyse social means of producing and inserting communication in global
civilisation and cultural contexts.

Main themes

This course takes a diachronic and anthropological look at the main means and processes of
communication, and at their numerous and complex interactions in, and with, the societies
where they occur and develop.

Content and teaching methods

The course studies the evolution of communications systems in the interactions that they
set up with societal structures, and the kinds of cultural 'construction' that they both promote and generate.
In the contemporary perspective of communications anthropology, analysis of the phases of
destructuring/restructuring alternates with a study of the periods when the main systems
are being installed and developed, while at the same time stressing the social customs dimension.

Other information (prerequisite, evaluation (assessment methods), course materials recommended readings, ...)

Examination (and possibly reflexive study).
Course notes.
