Aims

Objectives (in terms of skills)
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
Understand cultural and anthropological determinations that support architectural composition.
Analyse the principles of composition in a given work through case studies,
Become familiar with a few basic principles of composition belonging to Western culture in general,
Bring new methodological tools to bear in the context of the design studio.

Main themes

The course will situate architectural composition with respect to its anthropological (human beings as "talking animals") and cultural (Greco-Latin) conditions.
The course places a certain emphasis on composition in "elevation" (in the sense that a façade results from an elevation of matter above the ground plane), since the design studio gives ample opportunity for understanding composition in plan.
Case studies derived from major moments in Western architectural history will help elucidate the methods that have been and are available, including contradictory or conflicting aspects.
