Aims

Students will be made familiar with official documents on the conservation of monuments and with notions related to the patrimony, restoration, and conservation of monuments.
They will acquire basic knowledge allowing them to intervene as consultants in the field of restoration and conservation

Main themes

Historical presentation of the main concepts of architectural monument conservation and their evolution.
Study of foundational normative documents (Charter of Athens, Charter of Venice, CWATUP, etc.)
Representative case studies: buildings, groups/blocks/assemblies, cities.
Definition of key words: conservation, monument, restoration, patrimony.
Roles of the art historian and architect.

Content and teaching methods

Outline of the history of ideas related to general conservation and restoration as well as regional legislation on the subject. Demonstration with chosen examples of the typical intervention problems. Illustrated lectures. Analysis of official documents.
Case studies: Carcassonne, Fagnolle, the Louvre, etc.

Assessment: Oral examination.
Course Materials: Duplicated copies of normative documents.
