Aims

This course provides a general introduction to Art History and Archaeological Studies. By the end of the course, students should have a basic knowledge of the different branches, areas of research, methods and resources of Art History and Archaeology for the period covering 1860-2000. .

Main themes

This course teaches students the historiography of Archaeology and Art History, introducing them to the history of the two disciplines, from 1860 to the present day and highlighting the most important directions that research in the two fields has taken over the last 150 years. Key methods and thinking in Archaeology are described, as are the different art theories and sciences, and students are familiarized with the main international institutions (academies, museums and so on) and their role in providing Archeology and Art History researchers with valuable research tools.

Content and teaching methods

This course is a general introduction to research in Art History and Archaeology from 1860 to the present day. Focused primarily on Historiography and Heuristics, it also gives students an insight into the organization of current research, both nationally and internationally.
