Aims

1 - to be able to identify and reproduce Arabic sounds;
2 - to master a transcription system;
3 - to master the alphabet and to be able to read and write;
4 - to master the normal conjugations and declensions and to be able to use them;
5 - to be able to identify and form normal augmented verbs.

Main themes

Identifying and reproducing sounds specific for Arabic; reading and writing; acquiring basic grammatical data.
This course is preparatory to the A1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

This course is taught in the 1st semester.

- prerequisite : none (basic course);
- course materials are provided periodically;
- individual oral and written examination;
- this course and course ARAB 1101 form the ILV basic level in Arabic;
- the course is a prerequisite for all UCL Arabic courses.

Contents:
- learning pronunciation in context;
- learning the alphabet and its transcription;
- initiation into reading and writing;
- basic elements of verb conjugation and noun-adjective declension;
- verbs "to be" and "not to be";
- compound tenses;
- forming elementary sentences;
- study and use of the table of normal augmented verbs.

Methods:
- teaching is performed in French;
- preparation at home and active participation are required;
- oral teaching during the class;
- written drill exercises at home;
- written and spoken drill exercises during the class.
