Aims

- A reading and listening comprehension course aimed at equipping students with the receptive skills necessary for
writing their dissertation and other academic work.
- Reading comprehension : reading and understanding scientific texts (biology, chemistry, physics, ...). B2 - C1 level
of " the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ".
- Listening comprehension : understanding television programmes (talks, lectures) on scientific subjects (cosmology,
vets in practice, transport, …). B1 - B2 level of " the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ".

Main themes

To achieve these aims we will tackle :
. Reading strategies in a foreign language.
. The extension of scientific and specific vocabulary relating to science.
. The grammatical structures of the English language.
. Listening decoding strategies in a foreign language.
. English pronunciation and stress patterns.

CONTENT
Portfolio of texts and videos relating to science (see also above).

TEACHING METHODS
. Extensive reading of texts at home using reading strategies and note-taking techniques.
. Content-based activities in class.
. Analysis of and comments on the texts.
. Lexical extension exercises and comments on language points.
. Extensive and intensive decoding of television programmes.
. Pronunciation exercises on general and specific vocabulary.

PREREQUISITE
The B1 level of " the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ".
WORKLOAD
. classroom hours : 30 hours
. self-study : 30 hours

ASSESSMENT
. Exemption test at the beginning of the year (12/20).
. Continuous assessment.
. Written exam.
