Content and teaching methods
The course concerns the main characteristics of Italian culture as expressed through written texts and iconography during the period of Italian unification (1861).
The purpose of the lessons is to analyse the construction of Italian cultural identity. Within this process, positive and heroic aspects can be identified, as well as extreme ideologies which will develop into XX century dictatorships and fascism. At the same time the development of the idea of Europe in the XIX century will be investigated.
The course methodology will be based on the comparison between written texts and iconography in the XIX century and contemporary ones. As a matter of fact, newspapers, cinema and television make frequent use of terms and images dating back to that period in relation to contemporary issues.
At the end of the course each student will be required to write a comparative analysis (about 5 pages long) between written texts and iconography, and to make an oral presentation. The related documentation will be supplied by the teacher.
